Did you know?
Triphala is one of the most important remedies in Ayurvedic medicine and a mixture of the three fruits Amla or Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). In Ayurvedic herbal medicine, each fruit represents one of the three doshas (forces) Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which are supposed to be in balance for a healthy body and mind. Translated, triphala means "three fruits" and is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to improve digestion, metabolism and immune functions. Triphala is one of the oldest and best-known remedies in this field.
The health-promoting effects result, among other things, from antioxidant properties of the active substances contained, which are partly due to a high vitamin C content, but also to a large amount of tannins contained. Tannins are plant polyphenols whose antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, immunomodulatory, detoxifying and cardioprotective properties have been proven in numerous studies1.
The secondary plant compounds are found in cocoa beans, tea, wine, fruit, juices, nuts, seeds, legumes and cereals. Spices such as cinnamon, cumin and thyme also contain tannins.
Scientific studies have investigated the effect of triphala on strengthening the immune system2, and in another scientific study cardiovascular risk factors were significantly minimised in patients with type 2 diabetes compared to placebo3.
