In 1842 the Nuremberg pharmacist Weiss isolated the flavonoid rutin for the first time from the rue Ruta graveolens. The importance of these often yellow (Latin: flavus) plant pig-ments first came to light in the 1930s: thanks to Nobel laureate A. Szent-Györgyi, who was the first to isolate vitamin C. It was also he who gave the “vascular wall sealants” fla-vonoids the misleading name vitamin P. A little later, scientists found out that vitamin C alone cannot cure scurvy; it needs the natural substance rutin to help. This is where the outdated flavonoid name, vitamin C2, comes from.

Rutin, rutoside or chemically correct quercetin-3-O-rutinosid, is a glycosidated quercetin with the two-fold sugar rutinose. The substance is widespread in the plant kingdom and is particularly concentrated in parts of plants that are exposed to strong solar UV radiation. This protects plant cells from oxidative UV damage, because rutin is a highly effective rad-ical scavenger.

The largest known rutin producers are the wild pansy Viola tricolor, the Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, also Sophora japonica) and the real buckwheat Fagopy-rum esculentum. Traditional Chinese medicine has used the rutin in tea leaves, citrus peels and many other plants since ancient times.

Rutin's health-promoting effects are valued and have since been extensively confirmed in studies - across many body functions. The basic properties are cell-protective throughout

Frequently asked questions

How and for how long should I take Rutin 500 mg + C?

It is very easy to take: take one capsule daily after the main meal, preferably with some water. In principle, there is no limit to the duration of use; if in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Vitamin C is one of the most versatile vitamins and contributes to the healthy func-tions of the body and mind in numerous processes: immune defense, collagen for-mation for blood vessels, gums and skin, energy metabolism, nervous system, oxi-dative cell protection, iron absorption.
No. Although flavonoids and rutin in particular were wrongly considered "vitamin P" or even "vitamin C2" for a long time, they are now highly valued as potent plant-based vital substances.
Some medicine with rutin (rutoside) (https://www.gelbe-liste.de/ffektstoffe/Rutosid_631 ) or synthetic derivatives such as troxerutin (https://www.gelbe-liste.de/verbindstoffe/Troxerutin_116 ) are approved They are traditionally used against weak veins and other vascular problems.
So far, no relevant adverse effects are known.
There have also been no reports to date of any complaints resulting from the acci-dental ingestion of larger amounts of active ingredient. Should you still suspect such symptoms, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Research activities are ongoing into the possible healing effects of rutin. Experi-mental studies indicate various protective effects of rutin: for example, on chronical-ly inflamed nerves (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6040293/).

In fact, in 2019 scientists reported a possible UV radiation protective effect on skin cells. In the laboratory study, a combination of rutin and vitamin C was able to pro-tect isolated skin cells from damage after UV radiation better than either of the two vital substances alone (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00403-019-01898-w ).
